MSI U130 Netbook

MSI U130 Netbook can be described as an update to the U100. The chassis is made out of high quality plastic. It looks neat and compact, weighing in at only 2.4lbs. The lid is not exactly fingerprint friendly, and catches a few smudges now and then. The MSI Wind U130 features a 1.3MP webcam, which is a nice upgrade. However MSI have chosen to run it on the erstwhile Windows XP platform, at least in the US. Argos is selling the UK version with Windows 7 Starter. Price-wise, it’s comparable to Acer’s AO532h at just under $300.

MSI U130 Netbook is based around the next generation Intel Atom N450 (Pinetrail) processor running at 1.66Ghz. This coming monday (1st March 2010) sees the launch of the Atom N470 which runs at 1.83Ghz, we’ll have more news on that next week. The N450 Pinetrail promises a 20% reduction in power consumption as well as new new chipset which contains a revised graphics chip the NM10 which should provide us with an improved graphics performance into the bargain.

Most gadget enthusiasts will tell anyone who’s listening that these compact devices mainly serve basic computing purposes as also enable access to web applications, but cannot be used as a main computing system. But that doesn’t seem to have watered down the peaking consumer interest in netbooks.
